What is conscious sedation in dentistry?
Conscious sedation is the state of relaxation and drowsiness where a dental patient can still respond to questions. This is done with medications such as gas, oral and IV sedation.
How is conscious sedation administered?
We administer it three different ways. An easy way is by inhaling it through a mask. That is known as laughing gas. We can also give it orally and through an IV drip.
Will I feel pain during the procedure?
You feel no pain because you are in an incredibly relaxed state.
How are patients monitored during sedation?
At Charisma Dental, we have professionally trained staff monitor vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. We can always intervene and bring a patient out of a relaxed state if necessary.
How long does sedation last and when will I be awake?
Most start waking up after the sedation stops. Those on the nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, respond once they breathe room air. Those on oral or IV sedation will wake up immediately after the procedure, but be groggy. They will need to be driven home.
Are there health risks with conscious sedation?
It is safe for most, but we look at your medical history before approving it.
Do I need someone to drive me after sedation?
Yes, you will be too sleepy to drive regardless of the method you use.
