Your Child’s First Exam

YOUR CHILD'S
FIRST EXAM

At Charisma Dental, we believe good oral care begins early so it’s important to get your child in for their initial exam after their first baby teeth start coming in. They should have their exam about six months after the first tooth erupts or when they turn 1.

What Happens in the First Exam

Doing a baby’s first dental exam is
pretty simple. We just check to see
how teeth are growing and if they
are healthy.
A child typically won’t need any
procedures while they have baby teeth unless they have genetic issues or teeth problems caused by medication.

Your Child's First
Orthodontic Exam

Children should have their first visit to the orthodontist when they start getting permanent teeth, around 7 years old. It is just an exam to see how teeth are growing and whether there could be problems down the road. Orthodontics aren’t recommended until a child is older.

REGULAR
DENTAL EXAMS

Children should be going to the dentist regularly as they gain their permanent teeth. A dentist can educate them on caring for their teeth and start doing simple cleanings and checking for cavities.

Your Child’s First Exam FAQs

When should my child have their first dental exam?
The standard recommendation is for the first exam to be scheduled after your baby starts getting their first baby teeth or by the time they are 1 year old.
What is the goal of the first dental visit?
The first visit is focused on setting a baseline for the dentist to monitor growth and get the child to feel comfortable with a gentle exam.
What happens during a child’s first dental exam?
It is a gentle exam where the dentist looks at teeth, gums, jaw, and bite. We could do a gentle cleaning if needed but that isn’t typical. We advise parents about baby toothcare and fluoride use.
Will X-rays be taken at the first visit?
Charisma Dental typically doesn’t do X-rays for extremely young children unless we see something unusual where there is a need.
How long does the first exam take?
The appointment typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes.
How often should follow-up dental visits occur?
Followup visits are the same as with anyone, every six months for an exam and cleaning, if needed.
What should I do to prepare my child for their first dental visit?
It’s best to schedule a visit early when your child is fully rested. If they are a little past babyhood, explain to them why you are taking them to the dentist and what will happen there. Be positive. Provide medical and dental history to the dentist.
What tips help make the first visit go smoothly?
Stay calm and remain positive. Don’t transfer your fears about the dental office to your child. Come early to allow enough time to fill out forms, settle in, and allow your child to absorb the environment.
